The first half-dozen or so hours of Resident Evil Village might just be the best of the entire series. Its opening is a blend of horror, action, exploration, and puzzle-solving that pays tribute to – and frequently surpasses – its predecessors.
Resident Evil Village is a good game worth playing, and I think it’s very much a solid numbered entry in the series even if Capcom doesn’t want to call it one. But by transparently blending elements of 7 and 4, two of the most dramatic overhauls in series history, it feels less noteworthy than either
RE4 has a few scary moments, but is mostly very tense as opposed to terrifying, if that makes sense. Less dreading an attack and more realizing you’ve suddenly been surrounded because you didn’t cover your rear well enough. It’s not scary at all. For me it’s just an (amazing) action game with zombies.
That makes it longer than Resident Evil 7: Biohazard’s 9 hours, Resident Evil and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis’ 6.5 hours, and Resident Evil 2’s 6 hours.
