How do you track someone on Google Maps?

Note: You cannot share your location in Maps Go. Learn more about Maps Go features.

If they have a Google Account

  1. If you haven’t already, add their Gmail address to your Google Contacts.
  2. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app  and sign in. Learn how to sign in.
  3. Tap Menu    Location sharing  Add people .
  4. Choose how long you want to share your location.
  5. Tap Select People.
    • If you’re asked about your contacts, give Google Maps access.
  6. Choose who you want to share with.
  7. Tap Share.

If they don’t have a Google Account

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app  and sign in. Learn how to sign in.
  2. Tap Menu    Location sharing  Add people  .
  3. Tap More   Copy to clipboard. People with this link can see your location for as long as you choose, up to 72 hours.

You can also share through messaging apps. Tap More   select an app.

Stop sharing

  1. Open the Google Maps app .
  2. Tap Menu   Location sharing.
  3. Next to the person with whom you want to stop sharing, tap Remove .

Share your E.T.A

After you start navigating by car, foot, or bicycle, you can share your destination, estimated arrival time, and where you are on the route.

  1. Open the Google Maps app .
  2. Set a driving destination. Learn how to navigate to a place.
  3. After you start navigation, tap More   Share trip progress.
  4. Choose a person from the list.
  5. Tap Share.
  6. Location Sharing will stop when you reach your destination or stop navigating.
    • To stop sharing before you arrive, tap More  Stop sharing.

Share public transit info

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app .
  2. Choose the public transit route you want to take.
  3. After you start navigation, tap Share trip.
  4. Select the person you want to share with.
  5. Tap Share.

Note: You’ll stop sharing your location when you reach your destination.

See where someone is

Ask for someone’s location

If you’ve shared your location with someone, or they’ve shared with you in the past, you can ask to see where they are using Maps.

  1. On your phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app .
  2. Tap Menu   Location sharing.
  3. Tap a contact who’s shared with you before.
  4. Tap Request  Request.

Your contact will see your email address and a notification after you ask for their location. When they see it, they can:

  • Look at your profile and verify who you are.
  • Share their location with you.
  • Ignore your request.
  • Block you. You won’t be able to ask for their location anymore.

See someone’s location

When someone shares their location with you, you can see them on the map.

  1. Open the Google Maps app .
  2. Tap Menu   Location sharing.
  3. Choose someone.
    • To see an updated location, tap on a friend’s icon  More   Refresh.

Hide someone’s location

If you no longer want to see someone who has shared their real-time location with you on Google Maps, you can hide their location from appearing.

  1. Open the Google Maps app .
  2. On the map, tap their icon.
  3. At the bottom, tap More .
  4. To temporarily hide someone, tap Hide from map. You can stop hiding them at any time.

Note: You can stop someone’s location from ever appearing on your map. Learn how to block another person’s account.

  1. Tap Menu   Location sharing  More .
  2. Tap Hidden from map  More   Show on map.

Deny or block a location request

If you don’t want to share your location with someone in Google Maps, you can:

  • Deny the request: Tap No. You won’t share where you are.
  • Block the requester: Tap Block. You won’t share where you are, and your friend can’t ask for your location anymore. Blocking someone affects how they can contact you in other Google products. Learn more about blocking users.

Stop blocking someone

  1. Tap Menu   Location sharing.
  2. At the top, tap More   Blocked users.
  3. Next to the person you want to unblock, tap Remove .
